Nowruz – New Year 2023

Nowruz is the celebration of the Iranian New Year, literally meaning “new day” in Persian. Join us this year as we welcome the New Year and celebrate the women in our lives that empower us every day – Woman, Life, Freedom.

This year Peyvand will have Nowruz displays at 6 King County libraries on the following dates:

  • Issaquah Library 3/16/23-3/29/23

  • Newcastle 3/17/23-3/30/23

  • Kirkland library 3/17/23-3/30/23

  • Mercer Island Library 3/18/23-3/29/23

  • Redmond library 3/18/23-3/30/23

  • Bellevue Library 3/20/23-3/25/23

History: It is celebrated every year on the first day of spring which typically falls between March 20th and March 21st. Nowruz has been celebrated for thousands of years and continues to be observed today by more than 300 million people in Central Asian countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and across the globe. There are many traditions and festivities that come with Nowruz and the start of spring and the Iranian New Year.

Woman, Life, Freedom: Translated from “Zan-Zindagi-Azadi“, this slogan began in 2022 as a global action in solidarity with Iranian women & girls who are courageously demonstrating peacefully for their fundamental human rights. We wish them a year filled with peace and equality.
